The aim of the article is to explore the significance of the departures from the novelistic original inAgnieszka Holland`s film adaptation of Henry James`s "Washington Square". The elements omittedas well as those introduced in the film point to a consistent interpretative line adopted by thefilmmakers - to present the main charakter`s development in terms of the awakening of her body. ; The article identifies the motives and scenes absent from the novel and mobilized in the adaptationwhich indicate the importance of Catherine Stoper`s body to her transformation from a submissive, obedient daughter to a self-aware woman. Maurice Merleau-Ponty`s conception of "formativetouch" has been enlisted to illuminate Catherine`s development which is shown through a changein her gestures, movements, through recurring mirror reflections, as well as her newly found voice, insights and choices. ; The film`s ending is consistent with the filmmakers` interpretation: Catherine does not emerge as ultimately silenced by patriarchy - abandoned by her lover and condemned to a lonely existence in her father`s house. She triumphs over the circumstances, forging a meaningful life for herself, the life that involves pleasure as well as significant ties with others.
